The Calhoun Falls Chamber of Commerce 5-K and Food Drive was held on Sunday, November 18, at the Calhoun Falls State Park. There were 95 registered runners from South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia ranging in age from, boys and girls, age 4-12, in the Fun Run, and male and female, ages 8-65, in the 5K.

Participants gave 160 food items ($200 value in cash and food) to be dstributed by the Solid Rock Community Church.

"This is a great outdoor, family event for Calhoun Falls," said Lee Boggs, race director. "We had a four-year-old who ran the 1 mile, with a half mile up hill, and an eight-year-old to run the 5K, and they were both smiling when they crossed the finish line, seriously, unlike some of the rest of us.

"But there were several out-of-towners who told me this is one of their favorite courses because of the challenge and the scenery, which is in large part due to the work that the park staff does on the trail to get it ready," he said. "We also had a group of spectators from Calhoun Falls who came out to watch and show their support."

The overall top male winner was Matt Atkinson (21) of Abbeville with a finish time of 17:42. The top overall female winner was Robin Smith (20) of Greenwood with a finish time of 22:39. There were 53 age category award winners: 23 first place gold medal winners, 19 second place silver medal winners, and 11 third place bronze medal winners.

This will be the Chamber of Commerce's second run. The goal this year is 200 runners.

Come join us the weekend before Thanksgiving and be challenged by the rolling hills and running trail at the Calhoun Falls State Park Recreation Area. It should be cool and leaves will be turning and falling, so you'll possibly get to see scenic views of Lake Russell and maybe some wildlife. As it will be the season of giving, please bring canned food to donate to a local charity.

Food Drive: Runners are encouraged (but not required) to bring canned food to be donated to a local food charity. The food drive is completely voluntary. Contribute as much or as little as you wish. An area will be set aside on the day of the race to leave the donated items. Simply place the items there when you arrive then begin warming up.

A Turkey Trot T-Shirt guaranteed to everyone preregistering by October 31, 2007. Remaining t-shirts will be distributed first-come, first-register on November 18. Awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers in each age group in the 5K. Age Groups: 10 and under, 11-15, 16-20, 21-25, 26-30, 31-35, 36-40, 41-45, 46-50, 51-55, 56-60, 61-65, 66-70, 71+. All kids 9 and under crossing the finish line in the 1 mile fun run will receive an award.
