Friend Day at First Baptist Church
Slick Evans, who is preaching at First Baptist Church, and his wife Stacy, have designated April 13 as Friend Day. Stacy said "Friend day is a day when you invite all your friends to church and just fellowship together. It is good for people that may want, and need, to come to church, but are scared to come alone. This way, they can have a friend come with them." Friend Day will take place during the regular morning worship service, including a special singing.

First Baptist Church
Stephen "Slick" Evans is preaching at First Baptist Church. He is married to Stacy Tollison Evans, and they have two kids. Adya Kilgore James reported, "He has been there a few weeks now. He is a great preacher! We need some younger ones around, they really help fill up the church. Seems younger people can relate to some there own age. We would like to invite everyone to come hear Slick this Sunday."

Heather's Hype

by Heather Hatchett
New Year’s resolutions - - three words you might be cursing right now. It seems that the idea of New Year’s resolutions can be traced back to the early Babylonians. The Babylonians most popular resolution was to return borrowed farm equipment; today the most popular resolutions are to lose weight and to quit smoking. The thought of a fresh new year gives us hope to better our self and circumstances. Too often resolutions made only last through the first month. At least that has been my pattern; maybe you have better resolve than I.

I have resolved to gain weight in 2008! Ok, hold on. I know what you are thinking, but let me tell you how this is going to work. It’s a little trick we use to try on our children when they were very young. To get them to clean up their toys, we might say something like, “now don’t you put that toy in the toy box”. And as you guessed, they would throw the toy in the toy box. Obviously, I am not writing a parenting column! Anyway, I am thinking that if I determine to gain weight, I am probably going to be successful in my new year’s resolution. If I happen to lose weight and break my resolution, I will celebrate and won’t feel like a failure. I win either way, right?

Mrs. Chappell’s second grade class completed a writing assignment in which they created New Year’s resolutions. Some were academically honorable such as, be on the A/B honor roll and make a 100% on all tests. Others were socially motivated. One student resolved to be a good friend and another to be nicer to people. Like many adults some students desired to improve their skills by learning how to skate and play the electric guitar. One health conscious student resolved to stop eating junk food. There might be a Rockefeller being raised in Calhoun Falls as one young man resolved to save money this year. Two of my favorite resolutions from the second grade class are “to visit North Carolina” and “to play video games everyday”. One of Mrs. Chappell’s students may actually succeed in her resolution because she has determined the cause of the behavior she wishes to modify. She has resolved that she would “stop going to my auntie’s house ‘cause I be bad over there”.

The high school students also had some resolutions for 2008. One young lady confessed to already breaking her resolution of drinking water instead of soft drinks. Deyanna Bell resolved to gain weight and make good grades and Clarissa Felima to make the A honor roll the whole year. Both also resolved to find a way to keep their high school open. One student’s resolution is to graduate and another in a difficult situation vows to leave a certain person alone.

No matter our age, we all make resolutions whether we are at the beginning the year, the week or even the day. What ever your resolve happens to be, it is my desire that for Calhoun Falls 2008 will be GREAT!

West Virginia Mission Trip

by Lisa Bell
The Lake Russell Baptist Mission Team recently traveled to Little Birch, WV. We took along non-perishable food items and clothing to Little Birch Southern Baptist Church's pantry/closet. One Saturday each month they open the pantry/closet to the needy in the area, and at last count there were over 350 families signed up to participate. On Friday night we threw a party, and treated our WV friends to a hotdog supper, with songs, stories, and a puppet show. This was our third trip, and we're thrilled at the growth we see happening within the Little Birch Church, and are continually blessed each time we visit our friends in West Virginia. We want to extend a special thank you to all those here who contributed to our trip, from those who donated goods to those who prayed for us--Thank you! Angel Tree
The Pentecostal Holiness Church year-long Angel Tree project is providing toys for 36 kids from 13 families. Organizers initially hoped to collect enough to take care of 25 kids. But generous donations from individuals and businesses allowed more kids to be added. There was also enough to stock a needs closet and begin the Angel Tree for next year.

Angel Tree

As the Thanksgiving Season is upon us, I have been thinking about all of the blessings that I have received this year and all that I have to be thankful for. Who knew this time last year, that Hank, Elayna and I would be blessed with such a precious little boy, and now at 3 ½ months old, Benjamin is such a joy to our family. I could not imagine Elayna and Benjamin going hungry or not having any gifts on Christmas morning. That is another of our blessings, being able to provide for our children. However, not all children are so lucky.

Last year in Calhoun Falls, over 55 kids would not have received Christmas gifts had it not been for the generosity of “The Angel Tree” in Abbeville. Several teachers from our local school were able to go pick gifts to make sure that these kids woke up on Christmas morning to find packages bearing their name. One of those teachers was Jill Allen. Jill shared this experience with the Faith Café Sunday School Class at Calhoun Falls Pentecostal Holiness Church and thus our dream was born of being able to have an Angel Tree right here in Calhoun Falls.

Over the past year, we have been collecting different items each month. Now as December is upon us, we have a room full of bicycles, games, footballs, dolls, coloring books and crayons. Several weeks ago, 25 kids were selected to be the recipients of the items that we have collected. Unfortunately, those 25 are not even half of the kids that are in need in our local schools. We would love to be able to provide for more kids, but are unable to do so this year. We hope next Christmas to be able to provide for all of the needy kids in our community.

Over the next couple of weeks, our Sunday school class and other members of our church will purchasing the “wish list” items from the kids who are part of our Angel Tree project. Their wishes are pretty simple: Barbies, make up, games, art sets, etc. We also are hoping to provide all of the children with hats, gloves, socks or slippers, pajamas, and of course a few surprises. This is where we need your help.

First and foremost, we ask that you pray with us over this project and for the kids who will be receiving these gifts that they will know and understand the true meaning of Christmas and will be blessed throughout the coming year. Secondly, as you are out purchasing gifts for the holiday season that you will pick up a toy, pair of pajamas, hats, or gloves to donate to our cause. It will really give you a warm feeling to know that you have helped the little boy who dreams of having his very own basketball, or the little girl who has never owned a baby doll before, or the child who is cold at the bus stop because he doesn’t have a hat or gloves. And yes, this really does happen in Calhoun Falls.

We will be wrapping the gifts on December 8. This is the day of the CF Christmas parade, so as you come out to watch the parade, you can drop your donations off at the Pentecostal Holiness church or contact a member of the Faith Café Sunday School class and we will be glad to pick up your donation. If you are not much of a shopper, we will also be more than happy to accept your monetary donation and do your shopping for you.

The need doesn’t end there though, because as soon as we deliver the gifts that we have collected for this Christmas, we will begin collecting again for next year. So when you are out getting those after Christmas “specials,” please remember the angel tree and the fact that we would love to be able to provide for all of the needy kids in Calhoun Falls next year.

Thank you for your donations, support, and especially for your prayers for this project. For more information, you can contact me at suzanneh@nctv.com. Thank you and on behalf of the Faith Café Sunday School Class, we hope that you and your family have a Very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year!

Angel Tree
The Faith Cafe Class at Pentecostal Holiness Church has expanded the Angel Tree program from a Christmas project to a year of giving. Class members discovered last Christmas that 55 families in Calhoun Falls were incapable of purchasing gifts for their families. So they are accepted donations every month to be distributed in December.
