Highway Naming Proposed

by Lee Boggs
A letter has been sent to the Abbeville County Legislative Delegation requesting that the new Highway 72 four-lane be named the "Danny Wilson Memorial Boulevard." On behalf of visitors to the CalhounFallsToday.com Forum, where the idea originated, and family and friends of Sgt. Danny Wilson, Lee Boggs, publisher of CalhounFallsToday.com, wrote and sent the letter on March 1 to Rep. Paul Agnew, Rep. Mike Gambrell, Rep. Michael Pitts, Sen. John Drummond, and Sen. Billy O'Dell.

The letter included a request to name a portion of the new four-lane in Abbeville in honor of Constable Donnie Outz.

The idea started with Kenneth Prince, who suggested, "We, as a town need to honor his memory." Many other supportive comments followed and in just a matter of days the Legislative Delegation had been contacted.

The request requires a concurrent vote of the House and Senate to be approved. Agnew said the process is simple and will possibly receive favorable support.

The following letter was submitted for consideration:

The Highway 72 By-Pass in Calhoun Falls is just months away from opening. Many people have invested much of their lives into taking this project thru to completion. But nobody sacrificed as much for this highway, and ultimately the protection and forward progress of Abbeville County, than did Officers Danny Wilson and Donnie Outz on December 8, 2003.

Sgt. Wilson was killed in the line of duty as he served to protect the safety of Highway 72 construction workers. The Calhoun Falls native was 37 years old.

Constable Donnie Outz was killed in the line of duty as he rushed to Wilson’s aid. The Abbeville native was 63 years old.

On behalf of the family and friends of Danny Wilson and the readers of CalhounFallsToday.com, who suggested the idea and requested that this letter be written, we respectfully request a concurrent vote of the South Carolina House and Senate to recognize these brave Abbeville County Law Enforcement Officers by naming the highway as follows:
